Grand Junction Earth Station
Grand Junction tracking and telemetry equipment is operated remotely by the two major Americom TT&C sites, Vernon Valley and Woodbine. The associates at Grand Junction man the site for every spacecraft maneuver, and act as backup controllers to take over TT&C functions when needed.
Along with TT&C, the Grand Junction Earth Station provides telephone communication services for satellite news trucks and the Satellite News Gathering (SNG) business. This telephone service is provided through Grand Junction's Skyswitch, telephone hubs operating on several Ku-band domestic communications satellites.
Grand Junction also is the only satellite uplinking facility between Denver and Salt Lake City, a distance of almost 600 miles. Therefore, the station is called upon quite often to uplink news video from western Colorado and eastern Utah.
