GE Americom Announces Internet Congestion
Fighting Service for ISPs

PRINCETON, NJ, June 16, 1998 GE American Communications (GE Americom) announced today that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the U.S. can reduce much of their terrestrial traffic congestion by receiving their USENet newsgroup feeds via GE*Star, GE Americoms wideband video, data and Internet applications.

In an alliance NetAccess, an ISP based in Philadelphia, ISPs will receive aggregated updates from more than 30,000 distributed discussion groups via satellite 24 hours a day in real time. A typical ISP using a T1 (1.544 Mb/s) of Internet bandwidth should expect to relieve 20% to 50% of its inbound traffic congestion. This new service called ISP-Sat utilizes the latest digital video broadcast (DVB) technologies which permit the transmission of wideband data and Internet services up to 45 Mb/s into a receive satellite antenna costing as little as $500.

"We believe that satellite has tremendous value in relieving Internet congestion and lowering service provider transport costs. This service, which can be trialed free, will help ISPs integrate satellite into their environments for the cost of relatively inexpensive equipment and let them try it out before they rely on it," says Emmett Hume, GE Americoms Senior Vice President, Marketing.

"The technical resources of GE Americom compliments our software expertise and ISP market position to offer a powerful new service to ISPs, most of whom are looking for traffic congestion solutions," says Avi Freedman, President & CEO of NetAccess. "We expect to expand the reach of ISP-Sat into other regions in the near future."

GE Americoms GE-3 satellite is a hybrid that was launched in September 1997 and operates at 87 degrees West. The new ISP-Sat service will transmitted in Ku-band from GE Americoms Washington, DC-area uplink facility.
