Americom Asia-Pacific Establishes Hong Kong Teleport for GE-1A
February 8, 2001 - Singapore
Americom Asia-Pacific, LLC (AAP) today announced an alliance with Hong Kong's largest broadcaster Galaxy Satellite Broadcasting (GSB), to provide teleport services to the recently-launched GE-1A satellite.
From its facilities in Clearwater Bay, Hong Kong, GSB will provide a full range of teleport services for the powerful Ku-band satellite GE-1A, located at 108.2o E.L. Services can be provided on two of the satellite's three beams: the Northeast Asia and the China beams, which combine to cover China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and the northern regions of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Nepal. The teleport will enable the delivery of broadband data and Internet applications, VSAT network services, occasional use feeds, and SCPC and MCPC video programming to cable headends, broadcast stations, enterprises and hotels.
The teleport consists of an 11metre Ku-band antenna and several RF chains, with possible connectivity to Internet and fiber backhaul between Hong Kong and the U.S. Video compression and IP encapsulation platforms are also available at the teleport. The facility was completed in early December 2000 and is available immediately. The high power of GE-1A enables customers to receive signals on optimally sized antennas throughout Asia.
Elias Zaccack, AAP's Managing Director, said, "The relationship between AAP and GSB unites two highly respected entities, each strong in their own field, combining complementary offerings to provide service levels that are unmatched in our industry."
Stanley Tang, General Manager of GSB, said, "We are very pleased to be associated with AAP and the GE-1A satellite. This relationship will contribute directly to our positioning GSB as the leading teleport service provider in the region."
GE-1A, a powerful Ku-band satellite, is located at 108.2º E.L. and provides service via three beams to greater China, south Asia including India, and northeast Asia and the Philippines. The spacecraft features 28 active 36 MHz Ku-band transponders with 120-watt TWTAs. The GE-1A satellite is an A2100AX spacecraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, with a minimum useful life of 15 years. GE-1A will deliver Internet applications, VSAT, data and telecommunications services, cable and broadcast programming.
GSB is a subsidiary of Television Broadcasting Ltd. (TVB), a publicly listed, blue-chip company in Hong Kong, with more than 70% broadcast market penetration. In April 2000, the Hong Kong Special Administration Regional government granted a license to GSB to provide teleport services to third parties. GSB has built a teleport with antennas servicing GE-1A, APSTAR-2R, PAS-2 and PAS-8. Three more antennas will be in service this year and, when completed, the teleport will have more than 10 earth stations providing a broad range of transmission services. Galaxy is committed to making its Hong Kong teleport the most in-demand satellite telecommunications facility in South East Asia. Recently, GSB was granted a license to develop and deliver a pay-TV service in Hong Kong. GSB and its affiliated companies are planning to separate from TVB with shares of the newly formed company to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange later this year.
Americom Asia-Pacific (AAP) is a 50/50 joint venture company of Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications (LMGT), which delivers secure, reliable advanced-technology products and services to help enterprise customers leverage their telecommunications and information technology assets, and GE Americom, one of the world's pioneers in specialized, satellite-based distribution services. Formed in 1998, AAP has headquarters in Singapore with additional sales and technical support teams in Beijing, Hong Kong and New Delhi.
