GE-1A Satellite Begins Operation
January 8, 2001 - Singapore
Americom Asia-Pacific, LLC (AAP) announced that its recently launched GE-1A satellite has commenced commercial service. The operation of GE-1A signals the business inauguration of Americom Asia-Pacific, the joint venture formed by GE Americom and Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications (LMGT).
Elias Zaccack, AAP's Managing Director, said, "We are delighted that we can now begin to deliver best-in-class Ku-band service throughout the region. The strength of the signals being measured in each of the three beams will please the ISPs, telecommunications companies and broadcasters who can take advantage of lower cost Ku-band reception equipment and antennas to build their distribution networks."
Andrea Franz, GE-1A Satellite Program Manager, said, "We established ambitious performance targets for this spacecraft and the in-orbit-testing results verify that these goals are being met or exceeded."
GE-1A, a powerful Ku-band satellite, is located at 108.2? E. and provides service via three beams to greater China, south Asia including India and northeast Asia and the Philippines. The spacecraft features 28 active 36 MHz Ku-band transponders with 120 watt TWTAs. The GE-1A satellite is an A2100AX spacecraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, for a minimum useful life of 15 years. GE-1A will deliver Internet applications, VSAT, data and telecommunications services, cable and broadcast programming.
Americom Asia-Pacific (AAP) is a 50/50 joint venture company of LMGT, a global provider of network services and advanced technology solutions to enterprise customers, and GE Americom, one of the world's pioneers in specialized, satellite-based distribution services. Lockheed Martin provided the highly reliable A2100 spacecraft and launch services on behalf of Americom Asia-Pacific, while GE Americom is responsible for the orbital slot (108.2?E), satellite telemetry, tracking and control (TT&C) and orbital location services.
Formed in 1998, the AAP's charter is to provide high-powered capacity and state-of-the-art services to ISP's and their customers, programmers, telcos and carriers throughout the Asia-Pacific region. AAP has established its headquarters in Singapore with additional sales and technical support teams in Beijing, Hong Kong and New Delhi.
