QVC Buys Long Term Cable Programming Distribution Aboard SES AMERICOM's HD-PRIME Neighborhood
QVC Follow-On Service Distribution Via AMC-10
April 27, 2004 -- Princeton, NJ -- SES AMERICOM, an SES GLOBAL company, announced today that QVC, Inc., the leading electronic retailer, has signed a long-term transponder agreement for C-band service aboard its leading HD-PRIME™ cable neighborhood, already selected to distribute some of America’s most popular programming and networks. QVC’s television shopping network, which currently reaches 85 million U.S. homes, will be delivered aboard SES AMERICOM’s high-powered AMC-10 satellite, the first of two spacecraft to be launched this year in support of HD-PRIME.
"QVC has been an important part of our cable neighborhood aboard Satcom C-3/C-4 satellites for many years. HD-PRIME, built on a state-of-the-art platform provided by a pair of successor spacecraft, is set to offer QVC and other leading cable networks the quality and unmatched reliability they demand for their programming distribution," said Carl Capista, AMERICOM’s vice president of media and entertainment services. "QVC’s original programming is a valuable addition to the exciting programming lineup on AMC-10, and the network’s renewal decision is a testament to our commitment to bringing interactive services to the cable community."
“The reliability of our programming is only as good as the reliability of our distribution platform. SES AMERICOM, with its expertise and technical edge, supports our present and future content delivery needs,” said Tim Megaw, QVC’s senior vice president of Broadcasting and TV Sales. “AMC-10, which will be located at the same orbital position as Satcom C-4, will provide for a seamless transition of our service to the leading cable neighborhood in the country.”
AMC-10, an all C-band next generation satellite launched in February, will initiate service in May with 24 transponders at 135 degrees W.L. To further ensure the delivery of customers’ programming, AMC-10 features a higher level of on-board redundancy than the previous generation. Plus, an in-orbit protection satellite, AMC-7, which operates at 137 degrees W.L., is available if necessary for full satellite restoration. Programmers can use AMC-10 operating at 135 degrees W.L. to distribute content to more than 80 million American homes. AMC-11, scheduled for launch in late May, will be located at 131 degrees W.L. and complete SES AMERICOM’s HD-PRIME – America’s Cable Neighborhood, once the satellite is placed into service later this year. Already committed to the cutting-edge platform is a diverse array of programming producers including Viacom, C-SPAN, Crown Media, Scripps Networks, A&E Television Networks, Lifetime Entertainment, Court TV, NBC, iN DEMAND, E! Networks, The Weather Channel, Hallmark Channel, Home Shopping Network and Discovery Communications.
